10 Greatest Star Trek Callbacks

8. Benamite Crystals

Voyager first encountered quantum slipstream technology when they came across Arturis' ship, the Dauntless, in the episode Hope And Fear. The Dauntless was assimilated at the end of the episode, but the Voyager crew was later able to create their own slipstream in the episode Timeless using rare benamite crystals. Unfortunately, Voyager's engine proved unstable, but that was not the end of quantum slipstream research.

As we've seen in Prodigy, Starfleet was eventually able to build a recreation of the Dauntless, including with it's quantum slipstream drive, which Janeway used to search for the Protostar in the Delta Quadrant.

You may wonder why this tech wasn't used after the dilithium shortage caused by The Burn, but it was slightly cleared up in the first episode of Discovery's third season, That Hope Is You, Part 1. After meeting Burnham, Book explained that his ship couldn't travel via slipstream because he had no benamite. This implies that the only thing holding quantum slipstream tech back is the rarity of these crystals mentioned in Voyager. They were perhaps even harder to obtain than dilithium in the post-Burn galaxy.
