10 Greatest Time Travel TV Shows Of All Time

4. Outlander

This one's for all those people out there who think that time travel (and science fiction in general, to be honest) is a boy's game. Outlander is a lush, gorgeously filmed fantasy series that centers around Claire, a nurse from the 1940s, who is transported back to 18th century Scotland by way of some giant magical stones.

Let's be real, it's basically an exceptionally well-made bodice ripper, but there's something about it that unfailingly manages to capture the imagination of audiences. What's really well done here is that it uses the plot device of time travel to fully explore the historical implications of being a man (or in this case, woman) out of time. What knowledge would an average person from the 1940s be able to bring back to earlier centuries, and what would be the realistic application of that knowledge?

Also interesting are the glimpses of fellow unwitting time travelers forced to make a life for themselves after being unable to return to their original place in time, and how they assimilate into the community. Overall, Outlander really does an amazing job of seamlessly integrating the more fantasy-based time travel elements into what would be an otherwise fairly straightforward historical drama.
