10 Greatest Toy Commercials of All Time

8. Slinky (1960)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZL6RGkPjws In the realm of advertising, the imagery of the Slinky descending the stairs is truly iconic, akin to 2001€™s monolith or the Seven Year Itch€™s Marilyn and subway grate. This advertisement employs a limited colour palette, with orange backdrops and costuming that fulfill a dual-function: highlighting the product€™s packaging, and creating juxtaposition with the cool, metallic colours of the product itself. The direction is daring, no more so than in the point of view shot of within the slinky, which is borderline Hitchcockian (see: the stairwell in €˜Vertigo€™). The advertisement€™s final shot utilises forced perspective to create the illusion of a Slinky inexplicably traversing upon a level plane- arguably an act of false advertising, but then, what is magic if not deception?
