It's impossible to chart the legacy brought on by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's TV masterpiece, The Office, given the way in which it has seeped into almost every aspect of our modern culture. Indeed, there are glimpses of its comic styles apparent in pretty much every comedy show on television. And it doesn't stop there: Gervais' own brand of humour has penetrated every corner of the globe. You could genuinely argue that what's funny nowadays and the way in which we deliver jokes is entirely Gervasian.

So an episode of The Office has to make this list, given that it's probably one of very few TV shows that never put a foot wrong. It's "Training," then, that ultimately snags the prize: the fourth episode of the first season, "Training" highlights every inch of what makes this show great in a way that feels both entirely focused and surprisingly improvisational. Nobody ever forgets "Free Love Freeway,"the gut-wrenching moment where Tim asks Dawn out (and fails), and Brent's call of: "I think there's been a rape up there!"
