3. Coca Cola Human Christmas Tree
Yes I know its a little sappy, and the racial harmony is a bit too choreographed and on the nose (The Indian kid dressed in ceremonial garb for instance). Still, it's one of the most famous and iconic Christmas commercials of all time: it functions both as a cool time-capsule of 1970's culture and a wonderful Christmas commercial that showcases the spirit of peace and togetherness that the holiday brings. It didn't hurt that the song sung by British pop group The New Seekers was one of the catchiest television jingles of all time. Maybe it was successful because it didn't sound like a jingle (even though they included Coke in the lyrics) but more like a regular 1970's flower-power anthem. In fact, the jingle was eventually reworked into a
single by the band to capitalize on the success of the commercial. However, while a catchy song helps it was only part of the commercial's charm. Even if it was overly choreographed and literal, people like to see brotherhood and unity in society, whether it be at Christmas, or any time of the year. However, it is at Christmas that we find our capacity to love and accept one another at an all time high. It's something the people at Coke understood, and their famous commercial has been teaching the people of the world to sing in perfect harmony for over 30 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAEJbHBB-5Q
