Could it be anything else at number 1? The first TV breakup most people my age remember came in Season 3 of the iconic sitcom about 6 friends in their twenties living in New York. We wanted Ross and Rachel to get together since day one. Hed been in love with her since high school; she was heartbroken after leaving her fiancé at the altar. Thered been near-misses, blackouts, degrading lists and Italian guys but they eventually got together one episode in Season 2 after Rachel saw a video of a teenaged Rosss romantic gesture at her high school prom. They were each others lobster. Or so we thought. After Ross thought they had broken up (WE WERE ON A BREAK!), he slept with another woman and Rachel found out, resulting in one of the most heart-breaking episodes in sitcom history. David Schwimmer gives his most earnest and desperate performance ever as Ross begs Rachel to take him back as Rachel tells him youre a completely different person to me now as the screen fades to black. Devastating stuff.
