10 Hidden Details In Gravity Falls You May Have Missed
1. Foreshadowing
The producers of Gravity Falls are experts in creating little moments of foreshadowing which hint at upcoming events in the overall storyline.
In the episode "Little Dipper", Soos tries on Stan's fez and proclaims "someday", revealing his dream of succeeding Stan as "Mr Mystery". This is a foreshadowing of the finale, when Stan leaves Gravity Falls and puts Soos in charge of the mystery shack. Another instance is when Bill Cipher enters Stan's mind and calls Soos, Mabel and Dipper "Question mark, shooting star, pine tree". These are the symbols that identify each of these characters in the zodiac incantation that is supposed to send Bill back into the dream world, during the series finale.
The foreshadowing can also be presented through symbolism and visuals. The books on Grunkle Stan's office when Dipper and Mable check the security tapes are as follows: The Nuances of Fraud, The Business of Business, Daddy Issues, Scams A-Z, How to Ruin Jokes by Steven and Pete, and Glass Shard Beach High Yearbook, which foreshadow the events at the end of the following episodes.
There are minor augurs, such as Mabel sketching the exact design of the waffle guards in the season one episode "Headhunters", and in Mabel's "Future Matches?", one of the pairs is Candy and Dipper, a nod to Candy's eventual crush on her twin brother.
The creators also hinted at moments in the show which never actually happened. In particular, there were hints at Stan's death, such as when the head of his wax sculpture was cut off and hidden codes in the penultimate episode that one of the Pines family members would be dead.
