10 Horror TV Shows That Broke All The Rules
8. Dead Set - It Is Set In Our Own Universe
If you’ve never thought about it before, take a moment now to realise how most instances of zombie-themed media tend to be set in a universe in which ‘zombies’ don’t exist as a concept. There are no zombie movies or comics that exist in the worlds in which our zombie films and TV shows are set, leaving our characters conveniently clueless for when the apocalypse hits.
Not the only Charlie Brooker show to make it onto this list, this miniseries takes place in the Big Brother house in a fictional season of the show. Contestants and crew find themselves stuck on set as the zombie apocalypse breaks out in the wider world, meaning that the Big Brother house is by default turned into their own safe haven.
Because the show’s characters are familiar with the idea of zombies, the important things like isolating the bitten people and destroying the brain of the zombie to kill it are known. These things seem like but help hugely when compared to scenarios where characters go in blind.
In retrospect the show as a whole is a rather uninspired bit of commentary on reality TV and the human race’s own stupidity, but if you ignore the Brooker-ness of it all then it is at least a different take on the zombie genre if nothing else.
