10 Horror TV Shows That Got Cancelled After Just One Season
1. Lovecraft Country
After her work as a writer on big-budget television hits like Spartacus and Sons of Anarchy, and co-creating Underground, Misha Green would use her talents to become the showrunner on HBO's Lovecraft Country. Just a year after Game of Thrones ended, this was certainly a contender for the broadcaster's next big hit, especially with Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams serving as executive producers.
Lovecraft Country tells the story of Atticus Freeman, a former soldier in the 1950s who is looking for his missing father with the help of his uncle and childhood friend Letitia. Following a trail of clues to where Atticus' pops could be hiding, the group soon uncover the work of science and witchcraft that leads them on a path just as dangerous and unsettling as the racist police officers who prosecute them.
Despite earning some major awards and gaining some fans for its cruel, yet fascinating, world, the powers that be at HBO decided to cancel Lovecraft Country after the first season. But while there are usually very clear and precise reasons as to why television shows get cancelled, it wasn't so clear with Lovecraft Country. Its finale saw more people tuning in to watch it across all of HBO's platforms than Succession's finale for season two. It may have been an expensive show to produce, but that didn't quite seem to be the case either as HBO is known to make big-budget programming.
Although fans will forever be perplexed by this decision, Misha Green did tease what season two had in store. With an America more divided than ever before and the inclusion of zombies, it certainly had a promising premise.
