10 Horror TV Shows That Got Cancelled After Just One Season

2. American Gothic

Lovecraft Country
CBS

The '90s are fondly remembered by many for its horror television shows that not also introduced children to the genre with Goosebumps and Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, but saw creative and fresh hits like The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It may not be as remembered as fondly by the masses, but American Gothic is considered an underrated gem of the genre from that decade.

A large focus of American Gothic is antagonistic sheriff Lucas Buck, who uses his supernatural powers for his own personal gain and corrupting those around him, while hiding behind a seemingly friendly smile. With Buck wanting to claim young Caleb Temple (who turns out to be Lucas' biological son) all for himself, the child must learn to defend himself from his father's abilities with the help of the ghost of Merlyn, Caleb's deceased older sister.

When American Gothic aired in 1995, CBS showed the episodes out of order which made it hard for those who fell for the series' dark and twisted premise to follow in the order it was intended. Furthermore, it was not a typical series that audiences were accustomed to for prime time, as it dealt with themes of manipulation, sexual assault, and corruption.

Since American Gothic was given a second life on DVD and digital platforms, the show has gained a cult following, and it's is certainly worth watching in the linear way it was meant to be seen.
