HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's legendary video game series The Last of Us was met with a wildfire of critical acclaim from fans and critics alike, who lauded the new show as one of the most impressive television shows in recent memory, let alone the greatest video game adaptation of all time.
This success was due in no small part to Pedro Pascal's take on Joel Miller. The superstar of Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian took to his new role like a duck to water, effortlessly gliding into the boots of the tortured smuggler tasked with transporting the potential solution to the apocalypse - in the form of Bella Ramsay's foul mouthed Ellie - to safety.
Indeed, Joel is such a riveting lead because of the grey area of morality his character inhabits. Introduced as a devoted father, he's a man willing to throw himself in front of a bullet to protect his daughter. Fast forward 20 years and Joel's paternal instinct means he is still willing to do anything to protect Ellie - only difference being that "anything" now extends to prying off kneecaps.
Pascal underlines his character's slide from hero to villain in the first season's climactic episode - gunning down an entire Firefly base to save Ellie, as a surgeon attempts to remove what could be the cure to the pandemic from her brain at the cost of her life.
While well intentioned, Joel's desperation not to lose a loved one may have ultimately doomed the entire world.
