9. Robin’s Relationship With Her Father
As we all know, Robin’s full name is Robin Charles Sherbatsky Jr. She happens to have an extremely complicated relationship with her father, Robin Sr who is the textbook caricature of an abusive parent.
We learn of Robin Sr. mostly through flashbacks. We also learned that he refuses to acknowledge his daughter’s femininity and raises her as a boy and goes out of his way to call her son, dunks her head in a bucket of ice water to wake her up in the morning, and abandons her for 3 days in the woods only a knife to fend for herself. It just so happens that there were a lot of wolves in those woods.
Yet How I Met Your Mother treats all these incidents as nothing more than comedy fodder. Their narration is always accompanied by laugh tracks and no effort is ever made to explore them any further.
