8. Sokka’s Master (Book 3: Episode 4)
Despite becoming a better fighter over time and using his intellect to save the day on a few occasions, Sokka wants to find a way he can be more useful to Team Avatar and the war effort. While they are in the Fire Nation, Sokka hears about master swordsman Piandao living nearby, and after great persistence, convinces him to train him in the way of the sword.
At first, it appears that Piandao is having Sokka perform boring and pointless tasks. However, it is later revealed that this is all part of his training and helping him understand Piandao’s philosophy of swordsmanship. By the end, he helps Sokka forge his own sword from pieces of a meteorite he found for the material.
But when his training is complete, he reveals his true identity to Piandao, who challenges him to a duel where Sokka demonstrates all he has learned. Piandao then reveals that he knew Sokka and Team Aavatar’s identity from the start and that the way of the sword belongs to all nations.
It’s an episode where Sokka gets to prove how far he has come from the beginning of Book 1, both as a person and as a warrior.
