Generally speaking, it’s a big deal when an animated show has a celebrity guest star. With the cachet The Simpsons has, it’s attracted all manner of heavyweights over the years, from Anne Hathaway to Halle Berry and Kiefer Sutherland to Lady Gaga. Actors, musicians, politicians, writers… everyone who’s anyone has cropped up.

Sometimes celebrities voice original characters. Sometimes they play themselves. Either way, it’s tough to miss a truly iconic voice, whoever’s mouth it happens to be coming from. Interestingly, though, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt made a cameo quite by chance, without speaking a word.

Lots of bands have appeared on the show as themselves (Green Day, ‘N Sync and U2 to name just a few). In the episode “Homerpalooza,” Homer attends a music festival to try and prove to Bart and Lisa that he’s ‘cool,’ meeting the Smashing Pumpkins along the way.

Another high-profile band, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, appear very briefly with Homer, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that seems rather tacked on. Which it was: Eric Stefani (Gwen’s brother) was working on the show at this point in its run and wanted to give them an animator’s shoutout!
