6. Erik La Salle

The early years of ER was some truly celebratory television, in no small part of the fantastic cast. Doug Ross, Carol Hathaway, Mark Green, Susan Lewis, John Carter, Peter Benton €“ I don't think any hospital drama before or since has had a selection of characters quite so electric as this lot. Erik La Salle's Peter Benton was always one of the more 'gruffer' characters, serving as skilled surgeon, mentor to Noah Wyle's John Carter and love interest for several characters (Jeanie, Cleo and Elizabeth Corday). His greatest story line was how he coped with his deaf son and the custody battles that ensued, eventually resulting in his character leaving the show. When he moved on from ER, the actor did a few TV shows, but nothing really big. Erik hasn't been on television screens in almost two years. Benton was a brilliant role and it is a shame that didn't lead on to bigger things. For now, he's missed...
