8. Bones Toyota
Much like The Walking Dead, Bones is in thrall to the car-makers. Yet unlike AMC's zombie shuffle-a-thon, the scriptwriters are far more blatant in flogging their wares. Honestly, it's ridiculous I get the impression there must be a Toyota exec in the script meetings, because for the life of me I cannot comprehend exactly why there's so much shilling going on here. Oh, I know they kind of have to do it, but as anyone who's ever been kicked in the balls repeatedly knows that repetition can breed contempt. I wouldn't mind if the placement was subtle, but it's when they dedicate a good minute of screentime to Booth seeming utterly in thrall to Bones' Prius parking itself with 'intelligent parking assist' (they made sure the buzzwords made it into the script) during The Pinocchio in the Planter that you can probably smell a rat. There's only so many times a character can praise a car pm on a crime procedural before the whole thing descends into farce because frankly, the format doesn't lend itself well to automotive shilling. We'd understand if this was a show about cars, but it's not it's about crime and grisly murder, so when you're pimping out the Toyota Matrix's boot capacity by showing just how well a corpse fits, you've probably crossed a line. After all, who's that going to sell it to, other than murderers and people smugglers?
