10 Incredibly Shameless Product Placements In Well-Loved TV Shows

5. The West Wing €“ Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker There are certain people you don't use to promote certain things. Mel Gibson doesn't shill yarmulkes, the Catholic Church doesn't promote Durex and The Biggest Loser doesn't promote Subway sandwiches (whoops, two out of three ain't bad). So when you do decide to throw advertising into the TV mix, you need to make sure the right person is flogging your product. Barney Stinson promoting a brand of suit? Awesome, count us in. Daryl Dixon advertising Gerber knives as the lobotomising tool of the apocalypse? Sounds fun. A recovering alcoholic praising the demon drink? Perhaps not. But still, this happened. Yes, that's right, in a West Wing episode, a man sworn off the ssauce uses his vocal cords to luxuriously praise Johnnie Walker scotch. That guy's Leo McGarry, and in the episode 'Bartlet For America' he devotes a good minute to exactly why Johnnie Walker trumps all other scotches, and if this wasn't blatant enough, they cut to a clip of a barman lovingly pouring the stuff out of a bottle for our narrator as he continues to give his best attempt at a commercial. It's all a bit weird €“ I know McGarry still probably savours the taste of that which he gave up, but going all M&S advert in the background seems to go a little far. I'm serious €“ what with the label flash and the scene-setting, all they needed was Fleetwood Mac's Albatross playing in the background and you probably would've got it for your Dad's Christmas gift.
