Created by Chris Carter who famously admitted he didn't have any grand plan for the show's overarching conspiracy narrative (it shows, Chris), The X-Files was an instantly iconic hit when it debuted in the nineties.

The show's success relied on both the once-in-a-lifetime chemistry of stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny and its stellar premise, which saw a skeptic and a true believer trying to unearth alien conspiracies and paranormal spookiness throughout America. The series was a phenomenon which spawned spin-off theatrical films, countless rip-offs (we see you, Dark Skies), and even an appearance by its cast on The Simpsons.
