10 Insane Ways TV Shows Trolled Fans

4. Amping Up The Incest Vibes After Michael C. Hall & Jennifer Carpener Got Divorced - Dexter

Dexter starred Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter as forensic tech-turned-serial killer Dexter Morgan and his cop sister Debra respectively, and during production of the show's second season, the screen siblings began dating in real life.

Nothing too weird about that, right? Acting is acting, and Hall and Carpenter aren't really siblings, so it's all good.

The pair got married in 2008, though Carpenter filed for divorce in the summer of 2010, with the divorce being finalised the next year.

And in an incredibly bizarre and unnerving move on the part of the writers, in the very next season they decided to introduce an incestuous angle to Dexter and Debra's relationship, as Deb considers whether she's fallen in love with her brother and even has a dream where they kiss.

For starters, it was a storyline few fans had much interest in, and that the dopey plot required two recently divorced actors to play incestuous lovers on-screen just seemed needlessly cruel.

Considering this subplot basically went nowhere, arrived just as the show was hitting its creative nadir, and had little value beyond mere shock, it's tough not see it as trolling the cast and fans alike.
