5. Firefly - The Ballad Of Serenity
Firefly is a complex show to understand; Joss Whedon mixed a lot of complex elements into a very dynamic world. Firefly is both rustic and science fiction, dark and light, dystopian and hopeful, and its' many characters are both good and bad. The show is extremely layered and can take several viewings to fully interpret all of the themes and philosophical strands, but there is a simpler way for first time viewers to engage with it.
The primary theme of the show is the pursuit of freedom, and the creators let you know this in the introduction. Imagery of serenity flying over a paddock of horses shows you its space western setting, accompanied by the simple but powerful lyrics that hint at the overall theme of the story, "I don't care, I'm still free, you cant take the sky from me". Whedon shows you before you've even begun that our characters have an enemy that wants to take their freedom, and that they will pursue it no matter what.
Beyond that it's just incredibly hard to not sing along. The perfect mix of folk guitar and violins encapsulates the soul of the series perfectly, and by episode three and four you will join the voice in its' heartfelt tune about Serenity.
