10 Largest Megastructures In Star Trek
8. V'Ger
Originally a tiny probe launched from Earth in the 20th century, Voyager 6 soon grew into one of the most massive structures ever encountered by Starfleet.
Voyager 6 was presumed destroyed when Earth lost contact with it, but it was actually pulled into a spatial anomaly that transported it across the galaxy and onto a world of sentient machines. This machine-race saw Voyager 6 as one of their own, and upgraded it to evolve real sentience. With it's name partially scraped away, the probe became known as V'Ger and lost most of it's knowledge of where it came from. It's mission statement of discovery became twisted, and it's new technological enhancements given to it by the machine-race turned it into a deadly device of unfathomable power. It travelled the galaxy, consuming matter, energy, and people in it's quest to gather information.
When V'Ger returned to Earth, it's size had grown unimaginably. The probe itself was about 78 kilometres across (according to the Motion Picture novelisation), but it was surrounded by an immense cloud of energy. This cloud was said to have a diametre of 82 AU in the original release of The Motion Picture, but this was changed to a smaller, yet still gargantuan 2 AU for the Director's Edition DVD.
