The hyperfield around 10-C's new homeworld required ridiculous amounts of energy to maintain. To keep it running, they required a steady supply of boronite—one of the rarest elements in the galaxy, and a key ingredient for synthesising Omega molecules.

10-C created the Dark Matter Anomaly as a mining device. The DMA could travel through space faster than light, completely destroying any planets in its path, and harvesting boronite from the rubble. The DMA was about 5 lightyears in diametre, with gravitational readings similar to a wormhole. Anything within 12 AU of its ergosphere could be ripped to shreds and consumed.

While all this may seem impressive, 10-C actually had multiple DMAs at their disposal, as we saw when the first one was destroyed and instantly replaced with an even faster and more deadly one.

Eventually, Discovery and friends were able to establish contact with Species 10-C and successfully convinced them to stop using the DMA to mine their resources.
