10 Least Interesting Romances In Otherwise Great TV Shows

3. Jim And Maggie (The Newsroom)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Jake and Amy
HBO

A lot of elements of The Newsroom felt like Aaron Sorkin consciously attempting to recreate The West Wing's success, and Jim and Maggie were like the poor man's Josh and Donna. While that relationship was sweet and endearing, Jim and Maggie’s only made both characters more annoying.

Part of this is probably due The Newsroom only getting 25 episodes total compared to The West Wing’s 156,  so Sorkin simply didn’t have the time to allow this romance to naturally develop over the course of many episodes.

But even from the beginning, Sorkin never really convinced viewers that these two would be a good couple, and it becomes increasingly unclear why you should be rooting for them. Maggie is constantly screwing up and Jim is constantly saving her in the most smug way possible like he’s her knight in shining armor, and that becomes really tiresome. It’s another will they/won’t they built upon childish arguments, misunderstandings, hiding things from one another, and comically poor timing.

In the end, Maggie moves away because of a job that she apparently wouldn't have gotten without Jim, so once again her career is entirely reliant on how amazing and gallant he is, and the two begin a long distance relationship that you have no reason to think will be any good for either of them.
