Renly Baratheon's death was certainly unexpected, after his assassination by a shadow demon thing birthed by the Red Priestess. However, it also wasn't particularly shocking, when absolutely no-one believed him to be a true contender for the throne. The show focused far more on his sexual relations with Loras Tyrell, the Knight of the Flowers, than his qualifications for sitting on the Iron Throne.

For starters, Renly was beloved by almost everyone, thanks to his quick wit, good looks and keen sense of fashion. He also commanded just about the largest army in the Seven Kingdoms, totalling over 100,000 men. Despite being potentially the most powerful figure in the War of the Five Kings, HBO decided his relationship with Loras was of greater interest. Because of this, Renly's death didn't seem like a particularly big deal, beyond pissing off a certain beauty from Tarth.
