If The Walking Dead could turn a dark, post-apocalyptic comic book into a success, why couldn't this one translate from the page too? Well, it seems that Y: The Last Man arrived at a time where dystopian future series' are a dead horse being beaten, which didn't do this comic book adaptation a lot of good.

The advertisement for this show got it popping up everywhere. Backed by FX and Hulu, it reached plenty of audiences with YouTube ads, website banners and TV spots, making it look like a highly ambitious project. It seemed that FX had high hopes for this new adaptation, but it didn't take long for reality to set in.

Y: The Last Man seemed to be banking on the appeal of Handmaid's Tale's allegorical discussions about gender, with a healthy dose of post-apocalypse heaped on. However, it arrived on the scene like a damp sock, feeling identical to the other host of post-apocalyptic shows and having very little to give. Then, it got cancelled. Yikes.

The lack of instant success seemed to scare FX off on this one, but who really needs another run of the mill dystopian series.
