10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About '90s Superman Cartoon
7. Executives Kept Meddling With The Plot
Since Superman is the world's most famous superhero, you'd assume it would be fun making a show based on his comic series.. Unfortunately, the writers were regularly met with frustration since they had to work around many of the producers' restrictions.
Superman's adopted parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, were supposed to die at one point. The producers vetoed this decision, stating it violated their rules for depicting death in cartoons. They said the Kents could only die if they come back to life in a later episode. The writers were worried that resurrecting the Kents would come across as gimmicky and so, abandoned the idea.
But the producers weren't the only ones meddling with the show; DC Comics executives also butted heads with the writers. The creators of Superman: TAS, Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, wanted to depict Superman's cousin, Kara AKA Supergirl in the series. In the comics at the time, Kara was the cousin of a Superman from another dimension to emphasise Kal-El was the last survivor of Krypton. Timm and Burnett thought Kara should be Superman's actual cousin to give their relationship more depth. When DC Comics refused, Kara was re-written as a native to Krypton's sister planet, Argo.
