10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Babylon 5
2. Byron Was Meant To Be A Love Interest For Susan
After the death of the indefatigable Ranger Marcus Cole in season 4, J. Michael Straczynski planned to give Commander Susan Ivanova a romance with the rogue telepath Byron in season 5. Considering Susan's sad experiences with her telepathic mother being forced to go on drugs and eventually committing suicide, it is easy to see how she could have been drawn to Byron's dream of a world where telepaths could live in complete freedom without worrying of being forcibly recruited to the PsiCorps or forced to drug themselves to suppress their abilities.
However, Claudia Christian decided to leave the show after season 4, and Byron couldn't have a relationship with a character who wasn't on the station. The romance sub-plot was subsequently rewritten to include Ambassador Kosh's former aid Lyta Alexander.
