1. Delenn Was Originally A Man
When Babylon 5 was first getting started, J. Michael Straczynksi had the idea to have a male character played by a female actress (Mira Furlan) to emphasize the alien nature of the Minbari. It would also be a fantastic surprise when Delenn emerged from the chrysalis in season 2 as a human woman.
When the voice changer they were going to use to give Mira Furlan a more masculine voice didn't work, the backup plan was to keep the makeup the same and have Delenn be a woman. It would still make the Minbari appear more alien to have a woman who was more masculine in appearance by human standards, and the chrysalis reveal would still be a jaw-dropper. However, Furlan found the prothestics to be bulky and cumbersome, so Delenn's appearance was changed to appear more classically feminine.
