10. Community
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6Hj5zLlYdo Community is a show about a lawyer who has to go back to college. He fancies a girl, wants to get close to her, and inadvertently becomes friends with all of her friends whilst trying to get to her. Does anything about that plot suggest an overly-happy, piano-tinkling theme tune to you? The Community theme, 'At Least It Was Here' by The 88, mixes everything that made Jamie Cullum so unpopular with the tedious sunniness of The OC's or Scrubs's theme tunes. Community is a wry sitcom, that doesn't so much celebrate friendship, but use it as a tool for intricate plots and clever jokes; the theme song however doesn't suggest this. It's a tired, sickeningly cheerful jig that evokes montages of characters gazing longingly into each other's eyes, recounting all the things that true BFFs do. The matching of 'At Least It Was Here' with Community is a sloppy imbalance; it's a disservice to the show, and it taints the characters. Seriously, why does the theme tune have to be that happy?
