10 Mismatched TV Theme Tunes That Are Just The Worst

4. Buffy The Vampire Slayer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-xnvdtuRRo Does anyone else see a contradiction with the term, "pop-punk"? Punk rock was conceived in the 1970s as a genre to kick against pop, and it was a movement that was about much more than the music: it was an ideology and an ethic. Punk stars didn't care what people thought of them, they just wanted to express themselves. Pop, alternately, is a polished, careful genre, that doesn't suddenly embrace the spirit of punk simply because it's being performed by rebellious teenagers. The Buffy theme seemed to embrace this soulless sense of rebellion - after some kind of Thriller-esque organ intro of course, to suggest that this show is about the supernatural - even though the show wasn't really rebellious at all. Buffy didn't hunt vampires to kick against her parents' totalitarianism, she did so because it was her destiny to; bearing that in mind, doesn't the theme tune sound like it was picked by a bunch of condescending, middle-aged TV execs, who all assume they can connect to kids? Listen to the song a couple of times, with its endless drum fills and frenetic pick slides, and you'll soon get sick of it anyway; the Buffy theme sounds like it was written and performed by those kids that would always hog the school music room at lunchtime, and lacks any of the sophistication that Joss Whedon invested in the show. It's a truly abhorrent theme, with one saving grace; it's so fast, it's over quickly.
