10 Modern Doctor Who Stories That Waste Great Ideas
1. Aslyum of Daleks
The title of this episode alone is enough to raise the eyebrows of any Who fan. An asylum built for Daleks? That just sounds like such an exciting and tense setting for an adventure. It's made even better when it's actually the Daleks who request that The Doctor enters the Asylum. It makes you wonder what the Doctor is going to be facing, as how twisted must a Dalek be to put into an asylum? Perhaps they don't hate anything that isn't a Dalek? Maybe they exclusively hate other Daleks?
Sadly, the episode isn't executed well. First of all there is the story line with Amy and Rory getting divorced, which feels incredibly forced and just acts a distraction from the asylum. Then you have the overly complicated and confusing Oswin Oswald story line that begins in this episode, again taking the spotlight away from the Daleks. Not only are these two side stories not that great, but it takes the focus away from the asylum itself. To top it off, you have the strange addition of The Daleks forgetting who the Doctor is, a plot point that isn't ever really explored in the future.
We will likely never seen a Dalek asylum again, which is really annoying as this episode just doesn't do it justice. There were so many different ways the writers could've taken this story, and many fans will probably never forgive Moffat for that.
