10 Moments That Almost Saved True Detective Season 2

1. Ray Takes Two Shotgun Blasts To The Chest

The fact that the most memorable moment from Season 2 came at the end of the second episode is perhaps symptomatic of the problems with the latest True Detective - the show never managed to recapture that feeling of heightened anticipation in the episodes which followed. Acting on a tip from Frank, who informs him that Caspere had a second home, Ray breaks in to search the place only to be gunned down by a mysterious man wearing a raven's mask, who shoots him twice in the chest, once at point blank range. By far the best cliffhanger of the season - and one of the best scenes hands down - it left viewers wondering if Pizzolatto had done a Hitchcock in the manner of Marion Crane in Psycho, killing off the principle character at the end of the first act. Of course, Ray survives, the shotgun having been loaded with non-lethal buckshots. It a shame that Season 2 never quite managed to repeat the same level of edge-of-your-seat television this moment achieved, creating a genuine moment which transcended the standard noir format and delivering something truly memorable. Did you enjoy the second season of True Detective? What other great moments can you think of? Why not tell us about them in the comments?
