10 Moments That Almost Saved True Detective Season 2

10. Ray Beats Up The Bully's Dad With Knuckle Dusters

After ironically coercing the name of the boy who cut up his son's trainers out of his son, Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) unleashes his psychopathic vengeful side when he pays a visit to the bully's house on the pretence of discussing stolen property. Looking a little suspicious of Velcoro's state of mind, the father brings the bully out to the front of the house and Velcoro immediately launches into a torrent of abuse which makes the slurs against his son seem minor in comparison. "You're twelve years old and you're already evil as f**k," he says, before smashing his dad's face with brass knuckle dusters. Ray's twisted sense of justice is encapsulated in the words, "Take a look - he's doing this for you," before continuing to punch and kick the father to near-unconsciousness. As if that wasn't harsh enough, he signs off with, "If you ever bully or hurt anyone again I'll come back and butt-f**k your father with your mom's headless corpse on this goddamn lawn." Pizzolatto's dialogue might have been on shaky ground for much of the season, but there's no faulting it in this scene, and Farrell delivers it with a suitably unhinged intensity.
