10 Moments That Almost Saved True Detective Season 2

9. Frank Puts Santos And His Crew In Their Place

Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) is the type of character who has appeared in countless noir thrillers over the years - the gangster eager to go legit, caught up in forces beyond his control and forced to return to the life of crime he's desperate to escape. After realising the millions left in Caspere's hands aren't going to be returned any time soon, Frank is forced to return to ply his old trade in the underworld. This means that, inevitably, he has to reaffirm his gangster credentials, the key scene coming in the third episode - Frank instructs club owner Santos and his men to find out who is murdering his associates, orders which Santos isn't interested in hearing. Stepping up to Frank is clearly a bad move - after beating him up with his fists and putting him to the ground, Frank takes a pair of pliers from his right hand man and proceeds to pull Santos' "F**k you"-etched gold teeth out, as if to say, "No, Santos, f**k you!" Any doubts that Vince Vaughn wouldn't be able to pull off the role of a hardened gangster were put to rest in this scene.
