How I Met Your Mother's biggest strength is how it catches you so off-guard at times and this is probably one of its best examples.

In what initially appears to be a totaly normal episode about Marshall and Lily trying to have a baby, Bad News slips everything on its head. Even when we get to feel the relief of knowing that they are both able to have kids and the "Bad News" of the title seems to be misdirection, the end comes with a sucker punch.

When Marshall goes to phone his Dad to tell him, he finds out he's passed away. Just seeing that phone ring on the workbench was enough to know something was wrong.
