10 Moments When TV Comedies Got Way Too Real

3. My Screw-Up - Scrubs

Scrubs: My Screw Up
NBC

If Scrubs is about anything it's about growing up. Through JD's eyes you see so much that a doctor must deal with daily and the long-tail of it is that it's really not all smiles and fun.

In My Screw-Up, like in How I Met Your Mother's "Bad News," we're led one way by clever writing only for a gut-punch revelation that unexpectedly yanks us onto another road. We see Doctor Cox and JD fall out over the death of a patient, which sends Cox into a spiral of self-destruction that his brother-in-law Ben helps guide him through.

It's only at the end that we realise that Ben was actually the one who died and Cox was dealing with the loss through delusion. Seeing the witty stone wall of a character crumble us a shock to us all, and the last moment Ben talks to Cox’s at the funeral is bound to put a tear in anyone’s eye.
