1. Phonogram
Genre: Supernatural Drama
What it is: Kieron Gillen and Jaimie McKelvies story of of a world where magic and music are one and the same.
Why it would be great: This one would, admittedly, be a hard sell outside of England, but that doesnt mean it wouldnt be brilliant. This series is just so full of wonderful ideas, characters, and moments. The story takes place in a world where Phonomacers use music to cast spells, the NME is their grimoire, and the turntable their cauldron. There are different types of Phonomancers, including the brilliantly named Retromancers primarily using old punk records, and all of them use different music for different reasons. The really stand out characters such as David Kohl, a mage who uses the medium of Britpop to cast his spells and save the Mod-Goddess Britannia, or coven leader and dual personality Emily Aster, are engaging. There are no perfect people in this world that Gillen and McKelvie have created, and thats partially what makes the characters so interesting. Even when they screw up, you want to see them succeed. And boy, do they screw up some times. These stories are full of music as magic, and music as metaphor, explaining the history of Britpop under the guise of a dreamlike narrative full of twists and turns. It truly is a beautiful thing. Get the right cast, and this would be perfect for fans of The Misfits or Being Human. With two series already published, and a third on the way, there are still plenty of stories to tell, and one thing we can all agree on is that music truly can be magical in how it shapes a night, a life, or even a culture.
