3. Geordi Was Going To Be Revealed As An Alien

By the time that The Next Generation reached its seventh season, Geordi LaForge was clearly the least developed character of the main cast. The audience were introduced to his family in the episode Interface, though writer Ronald D. Moore felt that settling on a story where we meet Geordi's mother was an example of the show scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Jeri Taylor, executive producer on the show, revealed in the book The Fifty-Year Mission, that they toyed with the idea that Geordi was, in fact, only half-human. The idea was that it would be revealed that his mother had been impregnated by an alien and that the man he called Dad was no relation to him at all. This revelation would be followed by that species returning to collect him.

However, they decided to pass on this, perhaps owing to the fact they had toyed with a similar storyline in the fourth season episode Identity Crisis. The plot would go on to be recycled in Star Trek: Voyager, with Harry Kim taking Geordi's place in the episode Favourite Son.
