10 More Rick & Morty Fan Theories That Change Everything
2. What Is Rick Keeping Out Of His Universe?
As said before, Rick Sanchez is the smartest man in the universe. This always seemed like a given throughout the majority of the series, but in season five it was confirmed that Rick actually engineered the Central Finite Curve to ensure that he was the smartest man in any reality within the Curve.
On the face of it, this seems like a huge ego trip, not unlike what fans have seen from Rick many, many times over the course of the last five seasons. However, there may well be something more to it. The focus shouldn’t necessarily be on what Rick is making happen on the inside of the Curve, but instead, what he is keeping on the outside of it.
Obviously, an infinite amount of universes where Rick isn’t the smartest man in the universe, but perhaps also a threat so terrible, the only way to stop it would be to restructure the entire universe itself. Of course, this could be absolutely anything. However, there is a moment in the opening credits in which Rick and co. are being chased by a creature remarkably reminiscent of Cthulhu.
In H.P. Lovecraft's ‘The Call of Cthulhu’, the titular beast is an old god that used to rule Earth and whose very presence could essentially melt the mind of anyone who had knowledge of it. It’s not really that surprising that Rick would want to put as much distance between them as possible.
