10 More Underhyped Shows That Blew Everyone Away
1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer
To say that everyone was pessimistic about Buffy The Vampire Slayer would be an understatement. Following on from the 1992 movie, which flopped both critically and commercially, a series was surprisingly greenlit with director Joss Whedon as the showrunner.
With an all-new cast of characters, a change in setting and a much darker tone than the film, the series was originally produced by The WB and seemed to have very little going for it. The cast were all unknown, Whedon was young and inexperienced, and the budget was meagre.
But within just one season, Buffy The Vampire Slayer acquired a legion of fans and a positive critical reception, so much so that it would run for another six years and inspire an also-great spin-off about the vampire with a soul Angel.
These days, Buffy is consistently listed as one of the best shows of all time, and is also considered one of the most academically studied shows ever made. Not bad for a series inspired by such an awful movie.
