In a show predicated on the display of violent, grotesque psychopaths enacting their depraved fantasies, in which the protagonist is one among many, Dexters Trinity Killer is the worst of them all. A sadist as well as a murderer, Trinity was believed to have performed the same tripartite killings in multiple cities across the United States over a period spanning thirty years, but had such a convoluted modus operandi that almost no one in law enforcement really believed he existed: his pattern was too esoteric for most to see. At first, Dexter is in awe of him, but upon discovering Trinitys true identity and then getting to know him by forcing a meeting under a fake name, he finds that Arthur Mitchell isnt as sweet a family man as he first appears, and nor is he an uber monster that Dexter can look up to: Mitchell is a deeply disturbed, irrational man with a sadistic, violent temper, who believes that God sends people to perform certain important actions. The real Trinity Killer appalls the rationalist, reserved Dexter. The viewer at home, on the other hand, is absolutely terrified of him, in no small part due to John Lithgows towering, mesmerising performance, one for which the veteran actor would win both a Golden Globe and an Emmy. That makes one of the quietest moments in the season the most chilling of all: the moment at the very end of the penultimate episode when Dexter sees Mitchell casually walk into the offices of Miami Metro and say, hello, Dexter Morgan, and realises that the most dangerous man hes ever met has just discovered who he is. Cut to credits, and 2.1 million US viewers metaphorically soiling themselves.
