In an year where many fan favorites have met their end, these are the ten most significant.
2019 has been quite the year for television. Throughout the twelve month roller-coaster ride, we saw iconic shows make their curtain call, new fan favorites emerge and various long running programs both rise and drop in popularity.
If we are going to discuss how different shows performed throughout the year, we have to talk about their major characters and how they fared. Because at the end of the day, people can’t be invested in a story until they are invested in the people first, both in terms of their actions on screen, and how they bid us goodbye. The latter is particularly important because character deaths often make or break a show.
This year we saw numerous much beloved, and much hated, characters bite the dust. From valiant heroes sacrificing themselves for the sake of their loved ones, to heart-breaking tales of individuals simply giving up on life, there was no shortage of drama when it came to character deaths this year.
As we are rapidly nearing the start of 2020, now would be a good time to look back on all of 2019 and recount the TV deaths that moved us the most this year.
10. Katherine Hamilton - Kane
Let’s begin with the most recent entry on the list. This fall, CW expanded its ground-breaking, and admittedly divisive, Arrowverse with the introduction of Batwoman. The cousin of Batman proved that a woman is just as capable of donning the cowl and moved audiences with her emotional back and forth with deranged sister and now supervillain Alice.
The show did a very good job of building up this tension between the two, with Kate desperately clinging on to the slim hopes of getting her old sister back. The tipping point came when Alice takes control of a big Gala meant to honor their stepmother Catherine. Here, Alice finally enacts her revenge and it was the cruel nature of it, as well as Catherine’s conscience finding its voice that made this a heart-breaking spectacle.
Alice poisons both Catherine and her daughter Mary, and then provides enough antidote to save only one. In the end Catherine chooses to sacrifice herself so her daughter may live, proving that there is no evil or greed that cannot be overpowered by the love for one’s family.
