9. Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett - Orange Is The New Black
The character of Tiffany Doggett has always been a controversial figure. Starting from her white supremacist views, to her stance against abortion to the pretty blatant homophobia, she has split critics and fans right down the middle, despite the fact that she was meant to be an antagonist.
However as the seasons progress, her personality develops far beyond a stereotypical radical conservative. Some of which, such as her rape at the hands of Coates, makes the viewer sympathize with all her struggles. In season 7, her story takes a new and seemingly positive turn when she starts preparing for her GED exam. In spite of the discovery that she has dyslexia, Pennsatucky continues to persevere and sit for the exam. Unfortunately, this is where it all went fatally wrong.
Owing to Luschek not doing his Job, Pennsatucky doesn’t get the extra time she is warranted during the exam because of her condition. Devastated, she presumes she had failed and ends up doing drugs with Daya’s gang. Her grief gets the better of her and she takes does one bump too many.
The overdose kills her. Afterwards we are met with the oddly cathartic sight of her spirit walking away from prison, having finally served her penance. In a final, tragic twist, it turns out despite the odds, she had actually passed the exam. RIP.
