10 Most Disappointing TV Shows Of 2018

5. Here And Now

Here And Now
HBO

Here and Now was another series where there was a high level of trust in the creator - this time, Alan Ball. Having created Six Feet Under and True Blood (steering that show when it was actually still good), his track record offered hope for his latest HBO series.

Starring Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter, the show was a family drama with a slight supernatural bent, centring around a multicultural family and looking to tackle issues such as race and mental illness.

The show's issue is that in its desire - which at times almost feels like desperation - to be so well-intentioned and Important, it completely forgets to be a functioning TV series. It's a series of lectures; a checklist of topics that need to be discussed. It tries to be woke but ends up broke, with actual story arcs and character development eschewed in favour of its melting pot of ideas that it can't make up its mind about or give any authoritative voice to.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
