10 Most Disturbing Game Of Thrones Episodes

6. The Red Woman (Season 6, Episode 1)

Shireen Baratheon Death Game of Thrones
HBO

This was certainly one way to kick off a new series, and the opening episode left viewers with a disturbing image that they wouldn't forget in a hurry!

The tone of this episode is very solemn and there's an overriding sense of dread from the start. We're reeling from the death of Jon Snow, another fan favourite character, and further south we see Jaime Lannister return to King's Landing with the body of his daughter. We also have Cersei recounting the prophecy she was told that all of her children would die before her, and this is seemingly something which is becoming true.

The reappearance of the mysterious "Red Woman" Melisandre, also signals a bad omen. We are reminded of the shocking events that came before this, in which she was able to persuade Stannis Baratheon into killing his own daughter. Fanatically following whoever she believed to be the one chosen by the Lord of Light, she is now pursuing Jon after Stannis was defeated.

In a way, the final image in this episode helps to emphasise the cloud of death than hangs over it, as we see Melisandre removing her necklace to reveal her true form, a haggard and old woman. It is never made clear how old she is, and not only is it an incredibly disturbing image, it also emphasises her search for the "chosen one" is perhaps something that has lasted centuries. A chilling thought to be left with!
