10 Most Disturbing Game Of Thrones Episodes

7. The Door (Season 6, Episode 4)

Shireen Baratheon Death Game of Thrones
HBO

Hodor was the universally beloved gentle giant who assisted Bran Stark in his journey to becoming the Three-Eyed Raven, someone who can experience visions that defy time and logic.

Game of Thrones fans know not to get too attached to characters however as chances are, they are likely to meet their untimely end, and that was certainly the case for this fan favourite. Hodor's death is one of the more emotional ones of the whole series as we discover how he got his name, and why the only word he can say is "Hodor".

In this episode, Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven are looking back in time to Ned Stark when he was a boy, and we also encounter Wylis, the young Hodor. Whilst this happens, Bran and Meera are attacked by White Walkers in the present, and Bran screams for Hodor to "hold the door". As Bran is effectively spanning two different timelines in this moment, the young Wylis falls to the floor muttering "hodor, hodor", a truncated "hold the door".

Because of the fan's love for this character, this was undoubtedly one of the more disturbing episodes of the series, especially potent given the fact it would now impact any future rewatches. Going back from this point and seeing any episode with Hodor, now with the information, we have of how he got his name, adds a whole new layer and ensures that this particular episode is one that will always stay with you.
