Until The Bells in Season 8, this episode in Season 5 was the lowest-rated out of any of them on Rotten Tomatoes, and it polarized fans and critics due to its shocking subject matter and depiction of sexual violence.

As we see throughout the series, marriage is often something which is used as currency to form important alliances between rival families, usually for some sort of gain in power or social standing, or sometimes just to score a win over a rival. At the behest of the scheming Littlefinger, this episode sees Sansa Stark being married off to the utterly detestable Ramsay Bolton.

Whilst Game of Thrones episodes are usually renowned for their depiction of violence, this episode was particularly controversial in its depiction of sexual violence. In its shocking final scenes, we see Ramsay forcibly consummate his recent marriage with Sansa, in front of the helpless Theon.

Whilst it is encouraging to know that karma gets Ramsay eventually, and even more satisfyingly, it is dealt to him by Sansa herself, there is no getting past how disturbing and shocking this episode is.
