Following the destruction of Hershel's farm, Rick and co. are forced to survive on the road. They are shown to struggle in their search for shelter and food, so their luck seems to finally be turning when they come across the prison.

They quickly dispatch of the walkers in the field and manage to clear out a cell block the following day, but with dwindling supplies and a heavily pregnant Lori, the group must find food and medicine as quickly as possible.

A few members of the group enter the depths of the prison in search of the cafeteria and the infirmary to raid supplies, but when the group is forced to split up, Hershel is bitten on his lower calf.

Ordinarily, this is seen as a death sentence in this post-apocalyptic world, but Rick just couldn't bear to lose the only doctor the group had.

Using a belt as a makeshift tourniquet, Rick takes his hatchet and begins chopping his way through Hershel's leg while he is still awake and screaming.

It takes no fewer than nine swings for Rick to sever the calf, and the viewer is forced to watch and listen to every meaty, crunchy, wet chop.

There have been other amputations in The Walking Dead, but none were quite as graphic as this.
