The season seven finale focused on a hard time in Sheldon's life. Caltech were refusing to allow him to change his field of research, Penny and Leonard revealed they didn't want to live with him once they were married, Amy suggested they could live together which made Sheldon feel uncomfortable, and the comic book store had burned down.
As a result of this, Sheldon decided to leave Pasadena and head back to his mother in Texas. After Leonard initially protested against his departure, Penny insisted it would be for the best to give him the chance to figure out what he wants to do with his life. At that moment in time, it was unclear as to what the future held for Sheldon.
He'd had always been known for being the smartest man in any room, so seeing Sheldon stumped as to what to do with his career going forward was hard to watch. In addition, seeing Amy take out her frustrations by hitting Leonard with a pillow showed us all just how much Sheldon meant to her. It wasn't an entirely serious moment, as Leonard told Sheldon he'd miss him, to which Sheldon replied: "I know".
We can always count on Sheldon to make us laugh even in serious moments.
