When they first got together in the season three finale, Sheldon and Amy's relationship was nothing but awkward, moreso for the people around them than themselves. However, as the seasons went by and they developed better understandings of one another, their relationship slowly became less awkward.

In season ten, Amy headed away to Princeton for a while as part of a summer program at the prestigious university, something that Sheldon encourages her to take. But when his former admirer Dr Ramona Nowitzki makes an unannounced return, Sheldon realises just how much Amy means to him, especially after Ramona plants a kiss on his lips. This causes Sheldon to immediately board a flight to New Jersey where he ends up at Amy's apartment door, down on one knee with an engagement ring in hand.

Once Amy's opened the door to see her boyfriend proposing to her, the audience roar out with joy at the prospect of ShAmy becoming a married couple. Although we had to wait until the start of season 11 to find out whether or not she would accept Sheldon's gesture, there was no doubt in our minds that she'd say no. What started off as Howard and Raj meddling in Sheldon's life had now become one of the show's top couples.
